Debbie Coombes grew up on the Tiwi Islands. After a few years in Darwin in her twenties, she returned to the islands where she was guided in her painting by her maternal grandfather, Justin Puruntatameri  and mother, Florence Puruntatameri-Coombes. Her paintings depict joyful aspects of Tiwi life and culture.
